My main exposure to the Ethiopian music scene is through Ethiopiques, which covers many of the Ethiopian bands recording during the sixties. I have been paying more attention to the region since reading a post from Hans Hsu of Afropop Worldwide, a great resource covering music across the continent.
“Afropop Worldwide just returned from a stunning and revealing trip to Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia. A country steeped in tradition and deep historical roots, Addis’ music scene doesn’t disappoint. Our mission was to find out who are some of the up and coming Ethiopian stars. The results were several interviews with truly talented artists, such as Gosaye and Ashanafi.”
“Aster Aweke is no newcomer to the scene in Addis, in fact she helped propel Ethiopian pop music onto the world stage almost 20 years ago. She is still a favorite among Ethiopians, especially in Addis. Her energetic stage performance, beautiful voice, and soulful presence are why she’s still adored.”
The article covers in great detail several artists on the scene in Addis. Other resources for Ethiopian music and Aster Aweke that you’ll want to check out:
